If we all were more empathic in our relations with others, there would be much less tension and conflict in the world. I imagine that very few of us employ empathy on a regular basis. This is unfortunate. Empathy often enables us to understand another’s feelings and/or behavior. What a gracious world this could be if we would continually put ourselves in the other person’s position. Honey Cone’s Girls, It Ain’t Easy (1969) provokes empathy more so than any other song I can recall. When listening to it, I often find myself turning against my own gender. It is difficult not to sympathize with the perceived sources of this outcry. This exemplifies how dynamic this song is. This is not Honey Cone’s biggest hit, but I think it’s their best one.
