I remember watching Michael Landon, the Father I Knew (1999) during my senior year at UCLA. I enjoyed this television film very much. Michael Landon, Jr. co-wrote and directed it. He came under fire for what some viewed as a negative portrayal of his father. I walked away from this production with a greater respect for both Michaels. Michael Landon, Jr. showed a side of his father that I had not seen but figured was there. I imagine that a lot of us figured it was there after learning various facts about Michael Landon’s life.
Michael Landon, Jr. confirmed that his father was as fallible as the rest of us. He also confirmed that his father was a loving man who dedicated much of his life to bringing us all closer together. I cherish Michael Landon’s heartwarming contributions to television from Bonanza (1959-1973) and Highway to Heaven (1984-1989). Michael Landon, the Father I Knew is currently on YouTube. I have seen it several times. Something tells me that I will see it again.
